Exploring trends in emotional intelligence at the 2018 Division of Psychology Annual Conference

Thomas has started the new year by joining the annual British Psychological Society Division of Occupational Psychology conference, which took place in Stratford-Upon-Avon from 10 - 12 January.

The conference provides the opportunity for delegates to keep up to date on industry trends and developments, hear from both academics and practitioners and showcase projects, case studies and new methodologies.

This year, the conference theme centred around the strapline ‘Evolution +/or Revolution’ to celebrate the value of Occupational Psychologists – whether that’s through creating new, insightful research and putting into practice, or by developing what already exists to strengthen a body of evidence and practice.

Emotional Intelligence workshop

Thomas International’s highly experienced psychology team attended the conference to host a CPD workshop on Trait Emotional Intelligence. We were also proud to be joined by leading psychologist and developer of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue), Prof. K.V. Petrides who presented his research, based on a 25-year journey.

This workshop explored trends in Emotional Intelligence measurement, introduced the Trait Emotional Intelligence model and associated psychometric assessment, the TEIQue. The TEIQue represents a revolution in the measurement of Emotional Intelligence, having become one of the most widely validated and psychometrically robust EI tools available to practitioners and researchers alike.

Delegates discussed real life case studies, drawing upon their own emotional profiles and learned how their emotional traits can be advantageous or disadvantageous depending on the demands they face. They were also trained to deliver TEIQue feedback and received feedback on their own assessment, immersing them in the language of Trait Emotional Intelligence.

Other DOP Talks and Workshops

Several members of the psychology team stayed in Stratford-Upon-Avon to attend the remainder of the conference, where they continued their professional development as psychologists by attending other talks and DOP workshops. One workshop in particular focused on the design of evidence-based leadership development programmes, giving the team learnings to apply to the everyday work Thomas does with it’s clients in the area of Leadership Development. Other key themes emerging from the talks included the developing role technology plays in our work lives and the increasing impact this is having on our relationship with work, the importance employee engagement and well-being and challenges to them as well as the positive impact workplace diversity can bring.

The DOP Conference is a forward-thinking and collaborative event, and a fantastic opportunity to not only reflect on the achievements in Occupational Psychology but also discuss emerging trends.
