Maximising performance at Kent Cricket

The grand finale: Celebrating the success of...Celebrating variety at Cardinal Griffin Catho...

Our Winning Mindsets masterclass series travelled to Kent Cricket. England and Kent player, Sam Billings, and Kent Cricket High Performance Director, Simon Willis, joined us to discuss how psychometrics are used at the club.

Our Winning Mindsets masterclass series returned last night as we joined our partner Kent Cricket at The Spitfire Ground. The masterclass gave a number of people from the world of sport and education an insight into how psychometrics play a role in maximising performance at the club.

Joining us for the evening to host the masterclass alongside the Thomas training team was Kent County Cricket Club High Performance Director and Thomas Sport Associate Simon Willis. Simon took to the stage to give delegates an insight to how he has implemented psychometrics with players and coaching staff at Kent to develop self-awareness, enhance player performance and improve relationships and communication.

It was so powerful, it saved me years.

Simon Willis, Kent Cricket

Simon uses Thomas assessments as part of his coaching programme to help him to understand the best approach to take with certain players. Psychometrics help him to work with players to develop their mental strength and give them the edge.

The room engaged in an interactive workshop focusing on our Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) assessment. Delegates were on their feet, working in groups around the room to develop their understanding of the theory behind the assessmuent, before they were asked to guess what their own PPA profile would be.

We were delighted to be joined by Kent and England Lions wicketkeeper Sam Billings, who the previous day had been named in the England squad for their ODI’s against New Zealand. Sam and Simon had an insightful discussion about the role psychometrics played in turning Sam’s performance around in the 2014 season.

I averaged over 100 runs in the one day matches last year. If you'd have said that at the beginning of the season I'd have laughed in your face, it was that unrealistic.

Sam Billings, Kent and England cricketer

Sam shared his journey with delegates, describing the PPA as 'insightful' as it gave him the focus he needed to perform consistently with both the gloves and the bat. The results of the PPA gave Simon an increased understanding of Sam’s behaviours, helping him to adapt his coaching style to allow Sam to take ownership of his performance.
