What is succession planning?

Succession planning can be broken down into several factors, but to create an effective succession plan you need to focus on two key areas; identifying potential leaders and understanding how to develop them.

Identifying potential leaders

Our High Potential Trait Indicator (HPTI) assessment helps identify leadership potential by exploring a person’s personality traits and provides an insight into how suited they may be for a given job role or position, for example senior executive leadership. By understanding someone’s personality you can work with them to develop their strengths and areas for improvement, so they’re prepared to move into more challenging roles when the time comes.

Our Thomas 360 feedback tool can also assist with identifying potential leadership by helping employees to understand their strengths and potential areas for development, as suggested by their colleagues and customers.

Developing potential leaders

An effective succession plan ensures that you are constantly empowering and developing your existing employees.

Identifying the behavioural and emotional preferences of an employee provides an objective baseline to help a manager understand and develop their people. Our Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) and Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) offers this information.

The PPA enables you to gain a deeper understanding of how your employees behave, how they like to communicate, their strengths and limitations and their motivators. The TEIQue is designed to tell you how well your people understand and manage their emotions, how well they interpret and deal with the emotions of others and how they use this knowledge to manage relationships.

With the increased understanding that Thomas assessments provide, you can create an effective succession plan so you’re prepared for the future.
