A verbal reasoning test is a type of ability or aptitude test that you may be asked to complete when applying for a new job. Verbal reasoning is a part of cognitive ability or general intelligence and is the perception, acquisition, organisation and application of knowledge through language.

A verbal reasoning test measures your ability to reason from verbal and language based information. The Thomas General Intelligence Assessment (GIA) measures verbal reasoning using two tests called Reasoning and Word Meaning. Each test within the GIA will ask you to complete short, simple tasks quickly and accurately.

An example format of a verbal reasoning test would be a task where the test taker is required to read a passage of text and respond to whether they believe a sentence is 'true', 'false' or whether they 'cannot say/Insufficient information'. Only information written in the passage of text should be used to respond to each of the statements, so the correct answer must be selected based on understanding and analysing the passage literally. Verbal reasoning is different from basic comprehension tests which would only be based on 'true' or 'false' responses.

If you are being asked to take a verbal reasoning test in a language that is not your native language, regardless of fluency and comfort, it is important to ask whether the test is available in your native language. This will give you the best opportunity to perform well and ensure that your fluency levels do not negatively affect your performance
