Background
Thomas’ Emotional Intelligence Assessment, TEIQue, was developed by Dr K.V. Petrides and Adrian Furnham at the Institute of Education in 2002 and transferred to University College London in 2008. Thomas integrated TEIQue into its product suite in 2006, and our clients use it for recruitment, retention, development and management.
The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) looks at how individuals attend to, process and utilise their own emotions as well as other people’s emotions.
Theory
Thomas’ Emotional Intelligence assessment is a scientific instrument based on trait Emotional Intelligence theory. Trait emotional intelligence a collection of personality traits related to people’s perceptions of their emotional abilities. Some people are very confident that they can regulate their feelings, while others may feel overwhelmed by them.
Emotions influence most aspects of everyday life, and so as a measure of emotion-related perceptions, the EI assessment can provide vital information about an individual’s personality and behaviour. This EI measure has been shown to predict life-satisfaction and coping styles.
Format of the assessment
The EI assessment is measured by a self-report questionnaire comprising of 153 statements. Each statement has seven possible responses ranging from 1=completely disagree, to 7= completely agree, and individuals are asked to choose the response that best reflects the extent to which they agree or disagree with the statement.
Scores are then compared to a sample of the UK population (the norm group) to determine whether the scores are lower, higher or in-line with the majority of the UK population.
